Movie Quiz

A movie quiz in eighteen questions: who directed it, which decade it landed in, which ceremony crowned it.

What the eighteen questions ask

This movie quiz keeps returning to three plain questions: who directed it, which decade it landed in, and which ceremony crowned it. Eighteen questions, all built on films old enough to have settled into the record. Directors are matched to their pictures, pictures to their years, and winners to the ceremonies that named them — and none of those answers appear in this text, here or anywhere else on the site. Naming them is the quiz’s job.

Where the answer key was born

The key behind these questions was compiled twice. Two authors built the same dataset independently — a table of classic films with directors, years, and genres; the Best Picture roll across thirty ceremonies; a catalog of firsts — and the copies were compared value by value. Seventy-seven of seventy-seven keys agreed. The single honest disagreement, over whether one famous film files under crime or thriller, never became a question; it was dropped. A fact two careful readers split on is a rotten thing to hang four options from.

Deliberate omissions: box-office records, which trade places yearly; films too new to be settled; and quote banks, which we refused outright — reproducing famous lines by the page is quotation by the pound.

Playing a round

Four options per question. Pick one and the page answers back at once — right or wrong, with the correct answer displayed either way. After the last question you get a review of the full round, question by question. Your best score is kept in your browser. No signup, no account, nothing to join.
