Twenty questions, one century

This page holds twenty movie trivia questions that range across a hundred years of film: directors and the pictures they made, release years and the decades around them, Best Picture winners, and the firsts that mark where the medium changed. It is the sampler — if the site were a repertory house, this would be the season overview, one question from every shelf.

Two authors, one ledger

Every answer traces back to a dataset written twice. Two authors compiled the same material independently — a table of classic films with directors, years, and genres; the Best Picture record across thirty ceremonies, 1995 through 2024; a catalog of cinema firsts — and the copies were compared value by value. Seventy-seven of seventy-seven keys matched. The one place the drafts honestly split, on whether a certain famous film is a crime film or a thriller, produced no question at all; it was dropped, because a fact two careful people read differently has no business anchoring four options.

Also absent, by policy: box-office records, which change hands; films too recent to be settled; and quote identification, which we refused — reproducing famous lines by the page is quotation by the pound.

How a round goes

Each question sets four options in front of you. Pick one and the page rules on it immediately, showing the correct answer whether you had it or not. After the twentieth question a review lays out the entire round. Your best score stays saved in this browser. There is no account and nothing to sign up for.
